Angel Gilbert

Angel Gilbert is a rising second year student at Columbia University and an aspiring criminal justice attorney. Her work is informed by her own experience growing up with an incarcerated mom. However rather than serving time, Angel believes that her mom should have received rehabilitative care. Her sobriety would have prevented Angel and her sisters from navigating a corrupt child welfare system. Angel now heals her wounds by making a difference in other people’s lives such as through the nonprofit Strides In Recovery. There she runs alongside and mentors individuals experiencing drug addiction or alcoholism. Angel is also building and leading an affinity group for foster children interested in politics this summer. Overall Angel is beyond honored to be on the Witness To Mass Incarceration journalism team. She is excited to continue giving voice to an underrepresented facet of American identity one narrative at a time.
